New Fitness Challenge: Grouse Grind

I thought I would kick-start my blog, post my Summer hiatus, with another fitness challenge. Tomorrow, I take on the infamous “Grouse Grind” for the first time.

For those who do not know what the “Grouse Grind” is, it is a 2.9 kilometres climb up the side of Grouse Mountain, which lies on the North Shore of Vancouver. Obviously, the distance isn’t the challenge. It is the elevation gain: 853 metres (2,800 feet), which are “gained” step-by-step over 2,830 stairs!

To put this into perspective, the “Grouse Grind” is comparable to climbing the Burj Khalifa, the World’s tallest structure, which has 2,909 steps from Ground floor to Level 160 and is 829.8 metres tall.

Beyond the “Race to 40!”: what next?

My Race to 40! challenge will be over tomorrow when I turn 40. I can’t believe that I’ve already lived half a life! There is still so much left to do. The goals that I set myself as part of the Race to 40! challenge are just the beginning. I have big plans for the second half of the year and the next few years. The next big goal on my plate will be taking the entrepreneurial plunge and launching a startup. But first, a vacation with family 🙂

Race to 40! Progress Update Week 4 (FINAL UPDATE)

Only 2 ½ days left to complete my Race to 40! challenge. This will be the final progress update before my 40th birthday this Sunday, the 26th of June. The goal to blog everyday will likely be met while whether I complete the half-marathon in the target time or not may be impacted by a few niggles. With regards to completing my novella, it looks like I will get the writing done in time but not the editing. I will still be chuffed at this accomplishment even if it take a little bit longer to edit the manuscript. At the end of the day, I would rather take the time to polish and fine tune the manuscript till I am proud to publish it rather than publish a half done work for the sake of an arbitrary deadline!

Race to 40! Progress Update Week 3

Another week has passed. Time for another update on my “Race to 40!” challenge to accomplish three goals I set myself before my 40th birthday on June 26th. Sixteen days of 32 gone. Only 16 left to complete the race and accomplish the goals. This is the half way point!

This week, I score myself: 10/10 on my progress towards Goal 1; 7.5/10 on my progress towards Goal 2; and, 6/10 on my progress towards Goal 3.

Race to 40! Progress Update

I can’t believe it has been 9 days since I launched the “Race to 40!” challenge to accomplish the three goals I set myself before my 40th birthday on June 26th.

To recap, the three goals are to:
1. Post to my blog at least once per day; this is a minor goal, but required to bring my blog to life; this week I score my progress towards this goal a 9/10;
2. Compete in my first half marathon; I am targeting a fairly challenging time of less than 2 hours; I consider this a major goal; this week I score my progress towards this goal a 6.5/10; and
3. Finish and self-publish my novella; this is a major life goal of mine; this week I score my progress towards this goal a 4/10.

Race to 40!: Finding that creative spark…again

An amazing storyteller. My friends remember me as an amazing storyteller.

I look back on the bleak years in between my childhood and now; the desolate decades where creativity was sweated out of my being as I endlessly spun the hamster wheel trying to get ahead. There was no time for reading let alone story telling. And what time there was, I indulged away in the excesses of youth.

What happened? How did I go from being an imaginative child to someone boring? When did I change to from a creator to a consumer? How did I end up a vampire feeding on the ideas of others?

Today’s post is intended to provide some of the background and motivation as to why my third, and most important goal, out of the three that I have set myself as part of my “Race to 40!” challenge, is to complete my novella by my 40th birthday on the 26th of June.

Race to 40! Goal 2 is accomplished step by step

For today’s post, I elaborated on my second goal in my “Race to 40!” challenge, which is to accomplish one minor goal and two major goals on/before my 40th birthday on June 26th.

My second goal as part of my “Race to 40!” challenge is to: • Compete in my first half marathon;

Most people could compete in a half marathon and complete the race, perhaps by walking a good bit of the way. I am targeting a fairly challenging time of less than 2 hours; simple math suggests that to complete the 21 kilometers in a time of 2 hours or less you have to run at a speed of 10.5 kmph or be on pace to complete a kilometer every 5 minutes and 43 seconds; given the time target I have set myself and never run more than 10 kilometres before competitively (and only once more than 10 km in a practice), I consider this a major goal.

Race to 40!: Strategy to Achieve “Goal #1”

My first goal as part of my “Race to 40!” challenge is to:
•Post to my blog at least once per day;

It’s 23:50 PST here in Vancouver, so I’m cutting it VERY close, but I’ve got it done! Wouldn’t it have been terrible if I messed up at the first hurdle; it happens sometimes, but it would have been extremely poor planning on my part. Fortunately, I wrote half of this post before I headed out to the Vancouver Pixel Crafters Startup Drinks event so even though it was raining and I missed my Skytrain stop on the way back (Mr. Murphy rears his ugly head again!), I still got home in time to get this post completed and out 🙂
